Mary was 8 years old when she rode a horse for the first time. “Sugarfoot”, a 17-hand buckskin of unknown origin was quiet until a barking dog bit his hind leg. The horse sprinted under a tree where a thick branch knocked his passenger flying to the ground. Mary spent the summer with her right arm in a cast, shoulder to wrist, absolutely certain that riding horses was the only thing she ever wanted to do.
She joined Pony Club at age 11 and graduated at 18 to become a working student for legendary American horsewoman Betsy Coester. Out of that incredible experience, she moved into her first full-time equestrian job in a hunter/jumper show barn with a TB and QH breeding division. There she progressed from stable hand to exercise rider to show rider, trainer, and manager of the facilities for several decades.
In a riding career that spans more than 60 years, Mary was privileged to learn from many top riders and coaches while showing a wide range of horses across North America. During the past year, health concerns have kept her out of the saddle, but she remains unconvinced that her grounding is permanent.
Mary also found ways to creatively balance equestrian life with more traditional work. At various times, she has been an administrator in business and government, a corporate software specialist, and even travelled extensively as a flight attendant. After leaving her long-time equine job, she privately continued her riding career while resuming her education to become a Registered Nurse Specialist in Emergency and
Trauma Care.
For many years, Mary was a very active Star Wars geek—writing, reporting, reviewing, and interviewing New York Times Bestselling authors as part of the vast, worldwide Star Wars community. She also travelled beyond the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genres to become a published writer of mainstream fiction and non-fiction. In her spare time, Mary is a multi-media artist who specializes in equestrian themes.
